(The DIY Sanctuary You Didn’t Know You Needed)
Life is loud. Mentally, emotionally, and sometimes literally (looking at you, neighbors doing laundry at 1 a.m.). And in the middle of all that chaos, you deserve a space that’s just yours. Not for productivity. Not for emails. Just for you.
Enter: the self-care corner.

#1 The Blanket Situation
Blankets aren’t just for warmth. They’re an emotional support system. The right one can make your whole body relax like you’re in a cozy Pinterest post come to life.
What you’re looking for:
- One that’s ridiculously soft. Bonus points if it’s oversized.
- Textures that feel grounding (think fleece, sherpa, chunky knit).
- A color or pattern that makes you feel calm, not stressed.
My favorite is this sherpa fleece throw from Amazon. It’s ridiculously soft and fluffy, with a textured pattern that actually makes your space look styled (even if it’s really just chaos under the surface), you can grab it [here]
Drape it over your chair, keep it in a basket, or pile three on top of each other like a blanket burrito. Zero regrets. This is comfort layering at its finest.
#2 Plants
No self-care corner is complete without a little green. Plants don’t just look cute—they remind you to breathe, slow down, and take care of something (even when you’re not taking care of anything else).
Low-maintenance plant recs:

If you’re already drowning in responsibilities, a tiny succulent or even a cute botanical print will give you the vibe without the pressure.
#3 Good Lighting
You know what kills a vibe fast? Overhead lighting. It’s giving interrogation room. If you want your self-care corner to feel like a retreat, swap out the ceiling light for something softer.
Options that work:
- A small table lamp with a warm bulb
- Fairy lights or LED strip lighting around a mirror or shelf. I added these LED strip lights to my space, and suddenly it felt less like a dorm room and more like a ready to chill zone.
- Battery-powered candles (bonus if they flicker)
If you want to go deeper into how lighting can completely change the atmosphere of your home, I break it down in detail in [Creating a Cozy Vibe: The Power of Lighting in Your Space].
#4 Something That Feels Like You
Self-care isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is your corner. Add something that makes it feel yours. It doesn’t have to be fancy—just something that grounds you.
Ideas:
- Your favorite book or journal
- A photo, a vision board, or a print that makes you smile
- Crystals, incense, or essential oils if that’s your thing
- A snack drawer (yes, this is valid)
#5 A Place to Sit and Stay
No, not your desk chair. This space needs its own designated seat. A place where your body knows it can fully relax—no work, no chores, no emails.
Options:
- Floor cushion or pouf
- Cozy armchair or beanbag
- Pile of pillows by the window
- Literally your bed, just styled differently
My favourite: Large Crescent Bean Bag Chair. This large crescent bean bag chair hits the sweet spot—it’s basically a cozy hug you can sink into without completely disappearing. I added it to my self-care corner and now it’s where I drink coffee, journal, scroll Pinterest, and accidentally take naps at 3 p.m.
The idea is to create a separation from your “doing” space. This is your “being” space. Sit, stretch, lie down, stare at the ceiling—whatever helps you decompress.
Final Thoughts
Your self-care corner doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect. It just has to be yours. It’s about creating a physical pause button in your home. A reminder that you’re allowed to rest. To unplug. To sit with your thoughts or scroll through calming Pinterest boards for way too long.
Even if it’s just a corner of your room or a chair next to a plant and a candle—that’s enough. It counts. You count.
So go ahead. Rearrange your space. Light a candle. Wrap yourself in a blanket and be still for a sec. Your future self will thank you for building this little zone of peace in a world that doesn’t always give you one.
